MIYAN KI MALHAAR
Recorded LIVE
at DHRUPAD DARPAN
Raga Miyan Ki Malhaar has its own story to tell, musically. I like to sing as an explorer, not so much as a performer and therefore I request my listeners to approach my music from the same perspective - A musical exploration, a sonic journey. The original Malhaar (a raga invoked by monsoon) was Surdasi created by revered saint Swami Surdas ji (as the name suggests) interpreted in two different ways by two musical giants - Ramdas (Ramdasi Malhaar) and Tansen (Miyan ki Malhaar). Here I am attempting Miyan Ki Malhaar as a thought process, in a certain direction. Video courtesy Academy of Dhrupad Music and Research (ADMUR) and Bharata Arsheya Sansthan.

DHRUPAD & DIKSHITAR
My tryst with the compositions (kritis) of Carnatic Saint poet Sri Muthswamy Dikshitar started in 2021. Since then I have released one album - Iti - Dhrupad Meditations on Dikshitar, and published various singles on youtube and across music platforms singing his kritis from the Dhrupad perspective, in a first of its kind initiative by a dhrupad artist so far. Read more about my work on the rare confluence of the classical music from the north and south of India on the Dhrupad & Dikshitar page.
Nada Samyama, a Music organization based in USA has described this as "a brave endeavor and an offering of her phenomenal contribution to classical music - the meeting place for Dhrupad and Carnatic..."
"...her Dhrupad meditations on Dikshitar. explores rare Carnatic- Dhrupad confluence, reflecting her dedication to fostering cross cultural dialogue, spritual depth and artistic innovation..." says, Kavita Iyengar, PhD & Visual Artist
